CSI HIGHSCHOOL ENDING DUCHENNE – Battle of the Classes 2017

May 5 @ 8:00 am - 1:00 pm

The College of Staten Island High School for International Studies is proud to announce its 5th annual "Spirit Week" celebration, and second year partnering with the JAR of Hope foundation.

"Spirit Week" was born to enhance the unity, collaboration, and pride amongst the students in our school, through the promotion of two of our core principles: empathy & pluralism. CSIHS prides itself on being members of a global community, and works diligently to raise awareness around issues facing our society. The idea for Spirit Week began after Hurricane Sandy, as a way to partner up with a local charity, Staten Strong, to help struggling borough residents. In facilitating daily "class battles", competitions, and displays of school spirit, we raised over $5,000 for the cause. Last year, working with JAR of Hope, our school shattered its fundraising record, raising over $9,400 for the fight against Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

By means of creative fundraising events, class competitions in relay races, hallway decorations, spirit chants, class banners, and field events such as tug of war, the students at CSI High School will not only take on their other classes in this week long celebration in May, but will take on the lofty goals of raising $15,000 for JAR of Hope and working to fight Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

The JAR of Hope foundation has not only been embraced by our Spirit Week event, but has become a staple in our school. In September, building off the prior year's collaboration, CSIHS assembled over 10,000 individual lego pieces into small bags of 10 during two advisory periods in effort to help the Matawan, NJ middle school set the Guiness Book of World Records for longest lego chain ever assembled. Faculty members Rosario Miano and Kim Lombardi raised $5,000 each to run the 2016 NYC Marathon in the name of JAR of Hope.  Within the classroom, multiple students have taken on the issue of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy as a task in the schools annual  "Capstone Project" to raise awareness, funding, and help petition the FDA to allow a drug trial that is believed to help treat Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. A capstone project is a 12th grade culminating initiative where students work on a global cause through local action in small groups to help enact change and raise awareness over a lengthy, in-depth four month group project.

CSIHS is proud to continue to partner with Jar of Hope around Jamesy's plight and working to support this worthy cause as a component of our school's annual spirit week. CLICK HERE TO MAKE A DONATION https://jarofhope.org/campaign/csi-highschool-ending-duchenne-battle-of-the-classes-2017/
