Cecelia Pfleging – NYC Marathon 2018
Let me tell you about my brother Douglas, he has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. For those who don't know, it's a genetic disorder characterized by progressive muscle degeneration and weakness. DMD is caused by an absence of dystrophin, a protein that helps keep muscle cells intact. Doctors said that Douglas probably wouldn't make it past 18 years old, and now he's 30 years old and still going strong! It's truly a miracle. He has more courage and will than any person I know. He has been through every struggle in the book pretty much, and just never gives up even though there were so many times where he could have. Douglas just puts that smile back on his face and says, "I got this." Sometimes I don't know how he does it. He teaches me to appreciate everything in life, even the littlest things, because you never know what can happen tomorrow or the next day. He also has taught me to not feel sorry for myself even though sometimes I do. The littlest aches and pains are nothing compared to what he goes through on a daily basis, and he doesn't even complain. Honestly, I probably wouldn't be half the person I am today without Douglas. I have a different outlook on life because of him. I know some things are hard for him, but he pushes through it like it's nothing. Douglas is one of my motivations for wanting to do my first marathon, and I will be running in the NYC MARATHON on November 4th! I'm also fundraising for the amazing JAR of Hope charity, and all donations will go directly towards the fight against Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Thank you for your help!
